We started working with Matthew Walters & Charles Hall in 2020. After several need/find sessions and meetings, we put together a full fall safety solution that they could make their own.

Matthew Walters has been involved in the management and delivery of numerous new-build housing developments in a career that spans over 19 years primarily as a project manager, but more recently taking on the day to day running of HighDeck Ltd.

Charles Hall has spent the majority of his working life working in numerous roles in the construction industry. Friendly and hard-working, he is passionate about developing and forging new relationships both personal and business.

We provide HighDeck with Safety Decking, BrickGuards, Ladder Hatches,  Stillages & Ladder Guards.

Matt & Charles’ business has gone from strength to strength over the past six months securing big contracts with the likes of Gleeson Homes.

WHAT MAKES SILVERSTAR UNIQUE?

We have been a fully system scaffold company from inception, we started off with Quick Stage, then we moved to Layer. We have now moved into the safety decking industry as well which is obviously a system-based product. We have been going for over 22 years now and a lot of the guys that were here at the start are still here with us. They started off working at Silverstar as apprentices and they are now working in the office in managerial positions or supervisors on site. We believe that our internal recruitment strategy is one of our biggest strengths. We do not try and poach other scaffolders from other companies or anything like that, we believe that we should nurture and take care of our own. We want our staff to be working for us for a long time. If we need staff, we train them up ourselves and we hope that they have a long and fulfilling career here at Silver Star Services. One of the questions we faced when we decided to go with the JMAC safety decking system was how do we put it up? What do we do about erecting it and taking it down? So, we had discussions with the management team about using external installers, we thought of JMAC and all the other companies that offer this service, however we decided against it, we decided purchase the system and train our own guys on site to erect and dismantle.

HOW IS YOUR COMPANY DOING AT THE MOMENT IN REGARD TO GROWTH AND CLIENTS?

Before the pandemic we had our two best years in regard to turnover and profit. Our turnover went up about 20% three years ago, 20% two years ago and 15% last year. So the last financial year up to March 2021, we have dropped about 30% turnover, but this was to be expected because of lockdown and everything else. When we worked everything out, we are still set to have another record year which is amazing, so the future is certainly looking good for Silver Star.

WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST CLIENTS?

Speck Housing, Seddon Homes, Bellway Homes – we have a great relationship with Bellway and we currently do around of 70% of all the work for them in the North West. Now this is just for scaffolding but we are finding now, when we are offering the safety decking along with the order, the majority are taking it up. We have lots of safety decking orders going out now as well.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH JMAC?

We have been working with JMAC Safety Systems for around three months.

WHAT SERVICES DOES OUR COMPANY PROVIDE TO YOU?

We have purchased our own branded and coloured safety decking from JMAC and we hire a small amount of kit as well from time to time. JMAC were very good explaining all of the figures and all of the rates, this allowed us to tailor our prices and calculate our return on investment over the coming years. It was excellent, everything in black and white, very clear and concise. We could not be happier with the service provided to us.

WHAT PROBLEMS WERE YOU TRYING TO SOLVE BY ENGAGING WITH US?

Well it’s two fold really, we do not like being on the internals of houses because the square meter volume of scaffolding material costs a fortune. You use a lot of decks, a lot of boards and that’s the most expensive part of our equipment. You do not get the sort of returns that you would want to get on these kinds of jobs. We could not compete with the likes of Trad Deck and GM Netting that provide decking in this area, because of their rates, it’s easily half price in comparison to scaffolding. We used to attend meetings with our clients and they would ask us about the internals, we would actually advise them to use one of the local decking companies; like Trad or whoever. We did that one day and I came out of a precontract meeting and I said to one of the other managers “I’m not happy with this, we should be providing the full service for them.” We provide access and fall protection, that is our business, that is our bread and butter and the way we were going at the time, we were not providing the full service, it was only half a job. We were not providing the fall protection for the internals. So that is when we looked at this seriously and we started doing solid research on safety decking providers. This was about one year ago now.

WHAT OTHER OPTIONS DID YOU EXPLORE? WHO ELSE DID YOU CONSIDER?

We looked at Trad Deck, we looked at GM Netting, we looked at Rhino Deck. I honestly think that the prices are very similar, but genuinely, I had much more confidence in JMAC. I had seen every post on Linked In and then one day the company came up in a conversation with one of our competitors. All I ever hear is good things about JMAC. And from our initial meetings with Aaron, my confidence just grew and grew in your service.

WHAT IS IT LIKE WORKING WITH JMAC SO FAR?

Aaron Foley has been our main contact at JMAC and working with him has been great.

HAVE THERE BEEN CHALLENGES ALONG THE WAY? HOW DID JMAC RESOLVE THEM?

Yeah we have had a few bumps in the road, the main one being the stacking of the system. It sounds silly but believe it or not we just couldn’t get it right. When we were loading it onto the wagons, we couldn’t get the legs to sit right. Making sure the legs don’t move once they’re strapped. We just weren’t using the stillages right at all and after some work with Aaron we have now got the hang of transporting the legs correctly. We have also had the odd scaffolder that doesn’t like using the system, but you get that. Personal preference maybe, or maybe because it’s not as complicated as scaffolding and they prefer it being complicated, scaffolders can think like that sometimes and that’s fine. People don’t like to change I guess but it’s silly really. The safety decking is much more practical. Everyone is trained to use it, but we have identified three or four lads that erect and dismantle for us, and they are lightning fast. Our customers are really happy, it’s the full service under one roof, one point of contact.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS YOU HAVE REALISED FROM USING JMAC?

It has saved us time, reduced costs, increased our revenue and it is more profitable for our clients. The main advantage is we are saving a lot on our own scaffolding materials. We’re not going out and purchasing packs of decks individually to complement our steel. We do a lot of timber frame buildings, high rise flats and apartments, refurbs. All of them are generally fully boarded lifts. Our customers can now rely on us for all their access and fall protection needs. No need to deal with two companies, it’s all under one roof. Communication is streamlined, fast and efficient and with the system being branded and in our company colours, it adds that extra touch of professionalism. All our vans are white with blue signs, the safety decking is blue, it really does enhance our brand image. It looks really good and the customers love it. Communication really is key, we had a contract the other day, and we won the scaffolding. By default, we won the scaffolding down to communication. The site manger literally said… “Why do I want to deal with Trad to save myself 20p a square meter. Its too much hassle, just hire Silver Star to do the lot!“ If Trad doesn’t turn up, or if there is a mix up, you might think it’s just one phone call, But there’s quite a lot of interaction and things can get messy in communication. It makes sense to just provide the full service and everyone knows where they stand. We find this time and time again; customers would rather deal with one company that provides a full service.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE ELSE WHO IS CONSIDERING JMAC AND THEIR SERVICES?

This is exciting for me, we are starting up another section of the business, it’s a breath of fresh air so to speak. I’m from the old generation of scaffolding, but this has exited me and I think if anyone else is considering it they should give it a go. It’s something new. Its opening so many doors for us at the moment and we are more than happy with our partnership with JMAC Safety Systems.
