Tillson opted for our custom branded system in 2021.

Operations Director Philip Larvin joined Tilson Scaffolding in 2010. Philip brought a wealth of experience to the team with a background based in and around the power & petrochemical industry.

Phillip recently decided to diversify their product offering and have invested into safety decking.

WHAT MAKES TILLSON SCAFFOLDING UNIQUE?

We started about 16 years ago, there are a few big firms in Hull and our director worked for many of them when he was younger. Having gained experience working for most of the big companies in Hull, he decided to set up his own scaffolding company and take the best qualities from each company, along with some of his own ideas and the company exploded from there.

HOW IS YOUR COMPANY DOING AT THE MOMENT IN REGARD TO GROWTH AND CLIENTS?

Over the last three years we have grown astronomically. We did have around 40 lads three years ago, and now we have nearly 100 men working for Tilson Scaffolding, due to the increase in our client base. Predominantly we do house building, as well as quite a few big commercial jobs.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING WITH JMAC?

We spoke to Aaron Foley a couple of years ago to discuss a number of safety decking options, but we decided to give it a miss if I’m honest. At the time of speaking to Aaron, we decided that the market was not quite right. But, around 8 months ago we had another conversation… We have been assessing the situation with Covid and everything else very carefully, and we saw a unique opportunity to dive into the safety decking market at the right time. Aaron sent some kit down so that we could test the system and compare it to some of the other systems available on the market.

WHAT SERVICES DOES OUR COMPANY PROVIDE TO YOU?

Originally, we hired the safety decking system along with some other systems from some of the market leaders. We found that JMAC’s system was by far the most durable. We tested the system for around 6 months. We compared it with Trad and we have seen other systems, but we found that the JMAC system was robust and easy to use.

WHAT PROBLEMS WERE YOU TRYING TO SOLVE BY ENGAGING WITH US?

WHAT OTHER OPTIONS DID YOU EXPLORE? WHO ELSE DID YOU CONSIDER?

We looked at Rhino Deck - we didn’t like the look of that system, it was heavy and wasn’t as quick enough to erect / dismantle. So, we decided that plastic was the way to go. We then narrowed it down to Trad & JMAC. We had both systems on hire at the same time for around 6 months to compare and contrast between both systems. There was no comparison, we decided that JMAC was the way to go. The system is much more robust, little things like the pins were much sturdier and the system itself just seemed to be much firmer beneath our feet.

HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT THE QUALITY OF SERVICE THAT IS DELIVERED BY JMAC?

The first communication I had with JMAC was through their website. I filled out the form on the Thursday evening, and by Friday morning we had a quote. It was extremely quick. Aaron followed this up a week later, we arranged a couple of online Zoom calls. We decided to test the service and the system out over the course of six months. If we ever need any extra kit, Aaron would have it signed off and delivered to us on site within 48 hours. Much better service than expected - JMAC literally blow the competition out of the water in that respect. Very happy indeed. The kit was there no matter what, it’s been an absolutely unbelievable service. I can’t fault it at all.

HAS THERE BEEN CHALLENGES ALONG THE WAY? HOW DID WE RESOLVE THEM?

Yeah, there has been a few challenges, we needed more staff, more vans and more vehicles. Obviously, there’s a cost to all of this but we knew it was going to come. We also had to ensure that our men were competent in the use of safety decking. JMAC were very helpful in this aspect, full training was provided and they went above and beyond to make sure that we were erecting the system not only quickly but safely too.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS YOU HAVE REALIZED FROM USING OUR SOLUTION?

Well by using the JMAC system it has helped us reduce our costs massively, this works hand in hand for us as a business and for our clients. Erecting the safety decking takes half the time in comparison to erecting an internal birdcage. We can have a house done in an hour. Whereas with a birdcage it can take the full morning. It saves us a lot of time and we can pass these cost savings onto our clients. Productivity is key in today’s market.

DO YOU HAVE A STORY THAT ILLUSTRATES THE VALUE OF OUR SAFETY DECKING SYSTEM?

Most of our clients today want a scaffolding firm that can offer both safety decking and scaffolding. For us it has opened up so many doors. Previously we would have to hire the kit, which translated in a higher cost. We were relying on external decking companies to come and install the kit. If they were late or if we could not get the kit on time, it left us handicapped. Now that we provide the full service, everything is more streamlined and the costs are much lower. We are at the early stages, but now we feel like having our own branded system is the best thing we ever did.

WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO SOMEONE ELSE WHO IS CONSIDERING OUR SERVICE?

You should definitely try it out. We were not sure whether to plough such an investment into running the safety decking ourselves. But now that we have and the benefits we have experienced by doing so, we would never go back. We can’t really see any bumps in the road with it, the system is great, the service is amazing, and we are more than happy.
